CardioStart International has been an inspiration for me. As a senior Rush University Medical Center student, I was recently asked by my instructor to attend a CardioStart medical mission in Grenada. I had the honor of working with Dr. Marath and volunteers from all over the United States. The experience is one I will never forget and will continue to share for many years to come.
Located in the West Indies of the southern Caribbean Sea, the tropical island of Grenada is home to nearly 90,000 people. Grenada is one of the smallest independent countries in the Western hemisphere and has been destroyed on several occasions by forceful hurricanes. In 2004, thousands were left homeless by Hurricane Ivan. As an economy that relies mostly on tourism, nearly 32% live below the poverty line. Additionally, high school education is an option not chosen by the majority. The country’s government funded hospital, located in the capital of St. George’s, takes on most invasive surgeries and has an intensive care unit but lacks cardiac care services. All of these factors contribute to their dire need for international medical assistance.

Throughout the summer, Ms. Anh Tang made bi-weekly to weekly appearances at local venues as a finalist in the Miss Long Island USA Pageant. CardioStart was her pageant platform and she designed a shirt and wore it for the pageant's opening number. She also enlisted the help of many volunteers, consisting of models that either do promotional work or have worked elsewhere in the modeling industry. All members of the team were educated about CardioStart and its current mission. In guerilla marketing-type form, the team spent time with every single attendee at the venues. Every poster that advertised the appearances mentioned CardioStart, its purpose, and listed the website. We also blanketed the venue with displays and information in order to help promote the cause. At these appearances, she increased awareness about CardioStart, its purpose, and the mission to Vietnam. Ms. Tang also created a page on Facebook. Please visit our presence on Facebook and join Ms. Tang's efforts!

By day, registered nurse Jodi Gunther works in Northwest Community Hospital's intensive care unit, in the high-pressured world of cardiovascular surgery.
But she looks forward to another assignment, in an equally challenging setting: her upcoming medical mission trip to the mountainous region of Peru.
For the sixth time, Gunther of Island Lake will travel with a team of medical professionals organized by CardioStart. They will return to the city of Arequipa, Peru, located in the southwestern part of the country, in the shadow of the Andes Mountains.

I arrived in Grenada not knowing what to expect. I was immediately impressed by the quality and professionalism of the other CardioStart team members. We had brought supplies and equipment - including an EKG machine and an echocardiogram machine. But more importantly we brought a strong desire to get to work.
